Zainul Abidin (PAP MP) blamed LKY for losing the GRC in Aljunied

oldson sin wrote:
Ex-MP for Aljunied GRC, Zainul Abidin Rasheed told reporters: "You
need only ask the Malays and Muslims in Singapore - many were hurt by
those remarks(by LKY) and remain so".

" No Singaporean must ever feel alienated, or worse, marginialised."
Zainal felt that as a Malay, he has been alienated and marginalized
and remain so.

If this was how he felt as a Malay Singaporean, other Muslims must
have similar feelings. It is no wonder that Malays had voted against
PAP.

Is LKY to be blamed for PAP loss in Aljunied?

From my conversation with the Malays in Aljunied, I gathered, MP
Zainul Abidin had NOT visited them(those living outside his designated
zone) even once in 5 years.

To the Malays in Aljunied, the opposition MPs will be able to speak
more effectively on their behalf in Parliament without the control of
the PAP whip.
--------------------------------------------------------
SINGAPORE - While Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew felt that his remarks about Malays, Muslims and integration did not affect the Malay vote for the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zainul Abidin Rasheed said yesterday: "You need only ask the Malays and Muslims in Singapore - many were hurt by those remarks and remain so".

Mr Zainul, who was a member of the PAP Aljunied GRC team which lost the General Election (GE), made this point to "show how easily the knots of racial harmony in our community can unravel".

"Integration does not only mean living in harmony. There must be equally opportunities for all ... No Singaporean must ever feel alienated, or worse, marginialised," he told reporters yesterday.

Asked about the timing of Mr Lee's remarks, which were published in the book Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going, Mr Zainul pointed out the remarks had been made two years ago but as the book was only published earlier this year, he acknowledged: "So in that sense, (the) timing was bad for the GE."

Published by Singapore Press Holdings, the book is based on 16 interviews with MM Lee done by journalists from The Straits Times. It was launched about three months before the General Election.

However, Mr Zainul admitted that there "is no such thing as good timing or bad timing" to discuss potentially sensitive issues "because it sometimes touches on the raw nerves and this is where we have to manage the way we discuss such potentially sensitive issues, and issues that could also be divisive".

He also pointed out that some "very sensitive issues" pertaining to the Malay-Muslim community - such as National Service, tertiary fees and quotas in public housing - had been previously discussed behind closed doors and in public.

"I think it's the combination of the approaches we have taken that has brought the community to a level of maturity and be able to face these issues squarely, and then move forward," he added.

Unlike his PAP team mates, Cabinet Ministers George Yeo and Lim Hwee Hua, who had announced their retirement from politics earlier this week, Mr Zainul, stopped short of saying as much.

"I will always be involved in community work and I can never say, 'never', in life or in politics," the 63-year-old said. "But given my age ... I think it is unlikely for me to stand in the next election."

TRANSFORMATION AN ONGOING PROCESS
While various PAP leaders have spoken about the need for reform from within the ruling party, Mr Zainul noted the transformation "is an ongoing process".

He also recounted some of the changes which he had witnessed within the PAP.

As an editor with the Singapore Press Holdings between 1976 and 1996, Mr Zainul remembered Mr Lee - then Prime Minister - would consult many editors before important decisions and speeches.

"We found that if we do our homework and we were sincere in giving our feedback, in fact, Minister Mentor was even willing to change decisions which they had already made," Mr Zainul said.

When Mr Goh Chok Tong took over as Prime Minister, Mr Zainul pointed out the PAP Government tried to make the political process "more consultative" and "open".

Similarly, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is "more engaging and prepared to listen", Mr Zainul felt.

But he pointed out: "We have leaders among ourselves, or even in the civil service, people who have strong views themselves, who have their own opinions, and it's a matter of how do we actually blend the opinions, positions and feedback, and how do we bring them a policy that is acceptable to all."

While the Government "cannot please everyone", Mr Zainul felt it could do better in managing the communicating policies, managing feedback of people that may disagree with the Government and the communication process. "This is something which I think the party has started doing it, and I think we can only go deeper and do more," he added.

S’pore needs more well-educated new citizens : LKY

from: reborner
S’pore needs more educated immigrants to make country dynamic, says MM
Lee

SINGAPORE : Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has reiterated
the need for Singapore to attract more educated immigrants.

Speaking at the Indian New Year celebrations in Little India on
Saturday, Mr Lee said Singaporeans must recognise that with a
declining population, the country needs such people, including those
who have studied or worked in the US and Europe.

With the economy in a buoyant mood after the government upgraded its
growth forecast for the year, Mr Lee said Singapore needs to grow as
an attractive hub for international trade, investment and talent to
sustain long—term growth.

"We benefited from being open to immigrants from around the world,
especially China, India and the region. Throughout history, Singapore
has welcomed migrants. When I first took office, we had 62,000 babies
every year from a population of 2 million. Today, Singapore citizens
produce only 32,000 babies in a year when we should have 60,000 just
to replace our population," said MM Lee.

Little India is a glowing example of how early immigrants have
flourished and taken root in the country.

Mr Lee said the government understands the concerns of Singaporeans
over new immigrants and foreign workers. So it has taken steps to
moderate the inflow and widen the differentiation between citizens and
non—citizens.

Having educated immigrants here, said Mr Lee, makes Singapore more
competitive and dynamic.

"The majority of the new PRs and citizens are skilled workers and
professionals in finance, IT and R&D. They bring new skills, global
connections and a strong drive to create better lives for their
families," said Mr Lee.

Mr Lee gave an example of how one immigrant is making a difference.

"Shyam Srinivasan came from Chennai at age 14, and went to Geylang
Methodist Secondary School and Victoria Junior College. He took up
citizenship and obtained a teaching scholarship from the Public
Service Commission," said the Minister Mentor.

"Last year, he graduated top of his class in Physics at Oxford
University. He is now doing his Masters in Applied Physics at Columbia
University. He will come back and complete his NS. He will educate and
inspire the next generation of Singaporeans," he said.

Their presence has also helped to shape the Singapore landscape.

Mr Lee cited how many Indian temples today have been refurbished to
look "elegant" and "colourful".

"Our immigration policies have brought in better educated and wealthy
Indians who have made that qualitative difference to our lives. Their
support of these temples has resulted in this transformation,
reflecting the transformation that is taking place throughout
Singapore," said Mr Lee.

Mr Lee said the challenge is to integrate newcomers into Singapore
society and an event like this Indian New Year Celebration is a good
example of how integration can be done.

The event brings together different communities, not just among the
different Indian ethnic groups, but also Singaporeans of all races. -CNA

Educated?
What is the definition?
We have more than enough native educated Singaporeans!
These FT are like the Romania ambassador.
When they need you, they will sing how good SIN is but when they are going off they will bad mouth SIN until like they were forced to stay in SIN city.
I think the govt seriously do not know what is happening on the ground.
Do we really need those normal educated FT?
----------------------------------------------
From chokky

the unhappiness on the ground is real.
i already felt it when i was doing my ns.
back in the 90s, people talked alot, made noise, but i never got the feeling they were unhappy. but around the late 2000s, things changed. people talked, and they were starting to get genuinely unhappy. they started citing examples of unhappiness, something which was not done previously.

i had many of my guys in ns coming to me asking why they are forced to slog so much in ns out in the field when many others did not, and new citizens did not need to. frankly i had no good answer to them, and today i still have no good answer.

and now the guys have largely grown up---and what are they thinking of nowadays?
----------------------------------------
From diveaces
obviously the FTs here are not educated enuf...we need MORE!!??

haha...obviously by opening the flood gates, any kuchi kurang also can come in....so not very right...
in order to attract the capable and really proper FTs, the brand and the citizenship should be coveted....right now...the citizens here are like 3rd class...how u expect to attract the Good Class FTs?....

LKY run down Singaporeans again.

Subject: LKY run down Singaporeans again.

truth comment: this senile old man is talking bad about
singaporeans again. now he even said as far as the pap government
is concern, the plight of singaporeans is not their problem. how
can singaporeans support such an obnoxious government ?

New reason for FTs : S'poreans have become less hard-driving and
hard-striving

"Over time, Singaporeans have become less hard-driving and hard-striving.
This is why it is a good thing that the nation has welcomed so many Chinese
immigrants"
- MM Lee, National Geographic, The Singapore Solution, Jan 2010
.
Gee, we were told they were here to create jobs for Singaporeans and
we should be thankful. Then we were told they were here because of the low
fertility rate. Long time ago we were told they were needed for skills that
didn't exist in Singapore. We were also told they are here for jobs
Singaporeans did not want.
.
Now we are told they are here because Singaporeans are now too lazy for
Singapore Inc. Yes, years of good life and pampering by the PAP govt has
turned us into softies unable to compete in this globalised economy. Strange
isn't it? If these hardworking and hard striving Chinese immigrants are so
productive why has our productivity fallen as their numbers rise?
.
To the elitist PAP govt, the ordinary Singaporean is never good enough. The
70 yr old who has to clean tables at the Bedok Hawker Center for a living
does not strive hard enough. The mother with 2 disabled kids did not strive
hard enough to look for a job to support her family. The Singapore workforce
ranked no. 1 for over a decade was not hard driving enough for the PAP. Only
people who does any real work in Singapore is the PAP govt that is why their
ministers deserve to make in one day what some of the workers earn in a
year.
.
" If native Singaporeans are falling behind because "the spurs are not stuck
into the hide," that is their problem" - MM Lee
.
This explains why the blame is always put on Singaporeans for almost every
problem faced by our society. You find it hard to afford a HDB flat - that
is because you didn't strive hard enough. You struggle to raise your family,
pay the ever-increasing bills for electricity & transport and find it hard
to cope with the unstable job market - you didn't strive hard enough.
You recall what Wee Shu Min once said:
.
"i should think not. dear derek is one of many wretched, undermotivated,
overassuming leeches in our country, and in this world. one of those who
would prefer to be unemployed and wax lyrical about how his myriad talents
are being abandoned for the foreigner's, instead of earning a decent, stable
living as a sales assistant. it's not even about being a road sweeper. these
shitbags don't want anything without "manager" and a name card.
please, get out of my elite uncaring face."
.
....and her father is president of the defense business section ST
Engineering which is fed mainly by our defense budget i.e. taxpayer's money.
The PAP elites likes to talk about the ordinary Singaporeans not working
hard enough and not being able to compete. However, the PAP itself shuns
competition preferring to tweak the laws to retain their monopolistic
powers. The PAP men like to work in state own monopolies for ridiculously
high salaries and from their ivory towers command the ordinary Singaporean
to be cheaper, better and faster. We take the overcrowded buses and MRT so
that their transport companies can make money, we live in small overpriced
public housing (the most expensive in the world), we pay the 2nd highest
electricity tariffs in the world and we pay the highest salaries in the
world for those PAP ministers...if there is one reason Singapore is not
competitive it is because there are leeches sucking the blood of ordinary
Singaporeans.

No doubt about that. The Singapore public media is nothing
more than LKY personal propanda tool. He has direct access
to all the top managment especially the editors. He instructs
them not only on subject matters but also in format and way
it should be presented to the public.
For e.g. during the Sars crisis, LKY told the editors to do

A NEW prize to recognise outstanding international initiatives for city excellence was announced on Monday by Senior Minister and Co-ordinating Minister for National Security, Professor S Jayakumar at the opening of Singapore International Water Week.

Called the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize, the biennial international award focuses on four pillars instrumental to the success of every city - liveability, vibrancy, sustability and quality of life.

NOMINEES of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize will have to go through reviews and examination by a nominating committee and a prize council, whose members are:

It aims to recognise outstanding individuals and organisations who have contributed urban policies or projects which epitomise foresight, good governance or innovation in overcoming urban challenges in these areas.

The award is co-organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the Centre for Liveable Cities, and places an emphasis on practical and cost effective ideas that can generate impactful social, economic and environmental benefits, and as far as possible, can be replicated across cities and communities around the world.

The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize is the second Lee Kuan Yew prize to be launched. The first was the inaugural Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize launched in 2008, and similarly harnesses the spirit of innovation and foresight that contribute to urban city development.

The award is in line with Singapore's vision to promote excellence and thought leadership in the area of urban planning and management.

Minister for National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan, said, 'Many cities are faced with challenges of rapid urban growth, lack of housing and infrastructure and increasing traffic congestion. Singapore too seeks to develop a liveable and sustainable city with a good quality of life.

'We hope that the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize will serve as a catalyst to facilitate the sharing of best practices in urban solutions world wide, and spur further innovation in sustainable urban development in pursuit of city excellence.'

Nominees and the winner will be selected through a rigorous two-tier selection process which includes review by both a nominating committee and a prize council made up of local and international prominent thought leaders and experts.

The inaugural Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize will be awarded in June 2010, together with the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize at the Lee Kuan Yew Awards Ceremony and Banquet, to be held during the World Cities Summit 2010 in Singapore.

Once upon a time - LKY did mentioned

Once upon a time, LKY told Singaporeans not to vote for the oppositions. He
mentioned that if oppositions are voted into power, they would have
bankrupted Singapore's money's reserves just like what his PAP government is
doing right now through Temasek Holding with his untrained daughter-in-law
at the helm.

LKY globe trotting advising others while his son mess things up

This is ironic and comical.
LKY is travelling all over the world advising others how
to run their affairs while his own son is messing up the show
in Singapore.

This old man is really thick skin and completely out of touch
with reality. He is living in his own make-belief world.

LKY owed an explaination to Singaporeans

LKY keep on telling Singaporeans that their decision to
put our money into Western Banks is for the long term of
up to 30 years.

While he was telling us this, behind the scene Temasek which
is managed by his daughter-in-law was secretly liquiditing
these investments in Citi and Barclays at huge loses. They
were probably sold in the lowest price ever. Had they hold
on until now they could have made some profit like the
Arabs.

Lee Kuan Yew, why are you lying to us ?

But it was you people who went to the poll and voted for us, and now you say
you can't trust us. I think we wouldn't trust you people no more, 50 years
we wasted 50 years of our youth and lifes and you ungrateful buggers turn
your backs and say you can't trust us no more now. We could have been very
successful entrepreneurs making our billions, why do we even bother with
that miserable multimillions salary that we're getting. You people should
just wake up and look at those 3rd world nations, no food, no work, and they
don't even know what tomorrow will bring them. You ungrateful buggers must
experience the hardship like those 3rd world nations and then you will learn
to appreciate our sacrifice more and say how fortunate we are.
